we rely on the sense of vision and hearing mainly to gather information about our environment and i guess that would explain why you mentioned our ancestors. only that these senses dominate the human consciousness.

The purpose of rods is to be responsible for night vision and perception of brightness. Cones are just responsible for color vision.
