Telegraphic speech is the two-word stage of language in children, that consists of only certain prominent words or grammatical markers like in telegraphs.

Telegraphic speech comes from writing telegrams where telegrams are typically written in few words, without conjunctions or articles. As children develop language, they speak similarly like "want water" instead of saying "I would appreciate it if you could give me a glass of water". This period of telegraphic speech happens in children between the ages of 18–36 months.
