some obstacles of problem solving is called functional fixedness, which is giving objects a limited number of functions.
Another obstacle is mental sets, which is the way we approach a problem.
One can not minimize mental sets but can have a variety of mental sets to help solve a variety of problems

Another obstacle of problem solving is brainstorming which helps us generate a lot of ideas before you review and evaluate them. Mental sets are our tendency to percieve and approach problems in certain ways, therefore we can only use them to solve our problems.
