I'd say if your trying to solve for a long division problem you would use the algorithms, because it gurantees you a solution/answer if you know what you are doing and the correct process. Otherwise there might be problems if you don't knw what you're doing.

When trying to solve a long divison problem you use algorithms because they gurantee an answer as long as you know what you are doing.
Algorithms are a step by step method that guarntees a solution.
