Condition them. Teach them that if they bark or get mean around other people that they wont get a treat or you wont take them out as much, i think they'd get it.
Do an instant reward if they do something right. Don't hit them, that's illegal (animal abuse) dogs and children are basically the same, so if you hit your dog or if you hit your kid, they're going to turn out agressive or messed up somehow, so my recomendation is to do an instant reward when your dog does what you want it to and no reward when they misbehave.
